Poverty Unit Blog Post

In this unit, we learned about poverty and how it affects our world. Also how there are different kinds and that they live on very small amounts of money each day. We also learned about how hard it is to escape the poverty cycle and that there are different keys to escaping poverty. There is a lot we can do to help and that more needs to be done. This unit we did Change for change and that helped lead for small groups giving people in poverty a $25 loan though Kiva.

One activity we did really showed me how hard it is to live with a certain amount of money. Spent is a really good simulation that shows you how hard it is for people in poverty to spend their money daily. It made me come aware of how hard it is for them to use their money so they have enough for the next day. Since it is hard to spend for each day it shows how hard it is for them to save their money too.

Another activity where we had the speaker Astrid Tuminez. We had learned that their where huge keys to getting out of poverty. One of the key ways out was through good education. Astrid Tuminez got that chance to get out of poverty when she was offered for a good education that ended up getting her out of poverty and getting a really good scholarship. This made me see that if the people in poverty do get a chance to get good education, health care, or good jobs that it really can get you out of poverty.

From these activities I have learned that is hard to break the poverty cycle and that it can be broken. It can be really hard to get out of the poverty cycle because it can be hard to get a good education and a good education helps lead to a good job and then getting good health care. It can be broken because Astrid Tuminez got the chance to get a education that lead to her getting a good job and broke her out of the poverty cycle.
